Liminal Press + Bindery is a woman-owned studio specializing in the art, design, craft and experimental production of artist books. As the artist/owner of the studio, I produce a range of books in both traditional and untraditional formats that incorporate various fine arts methods such as bookbinding, papermaking, printmaking, illustration, design, painting, letterpress printing, and collage. My books are either one-of-a-kind or are published in small editions.
I founded the studio upon the value of promoting self- and idea-expression through book arts. My books convey a sense of understanding, transformation and enlightenment by telling stories and communicating ideas in a way that promotes my social, environmental, spiritual and physical ideals.
The name of the studio was inspired by the meaning of the word “liminal”: of or relating to a sensory threshold, a state of “betwixt and between". During this state of being, one’s sense of identity dissolves to some extent, initiating a period of transition where normal limits to thought, self-understanding, and behavior are relaxed, thus leading to new perspectives. In other words, liminal defines a place (either physical or psychological) where people are passing through, thus enabling a transformative experience that results in unique perspectives on what has come before and what may come next. In this sense, I hope that the viewer’s experience of my work enables them to engage in the “betwixt and between” space of the books and to then come away with new perspectives based on personal interpretation.
